San Luis Obispo BMW Shoppers Get A First Look - 2019 BMW 3 Series
The BMW 3 Series has been the standard that rival compact sports sedans aspire to. To stay competitive, the engineers at BMW have been busy at work crafting a new 3 Series with even better driving dynamics than before. As before, the 2019 BMW 3 Series offers drivers the perfect blend of performance, luxury and quality. Buyers at dealers like the San Luis Obispo BMW dealership also appreciate the 3 Series’ powerful and fuel-efficient engines.
The 2019 BMW 3 Series is longer, wider and taller than the outgoing model, with a wheelbase that’s 1.6 inches longer. The 3 Series is also 121 pounds lighter, depending on the configuration.
There are two models, the 330i and M340i. Both are available with rear-wheel drive or BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system. Buyers can get the 330i in Sport Line, Luxury Line and M Sport configurations.
The 330i is powered by an updated 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine generating 255 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft. of torque, a boost of 7 hp and 37 lb.-ft. over last year’s model. This powerplant is connected to a new eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters that provides shorter shift times and shorter lower gear ratios to increase acceleration. According to BMW, this engine can propel the 330i to 60 mph from off the line 5.6 seconds.
It’s worth noting that the 2019 BMW 3 Series no longer offers a manual gearbox, which may shock some driving enthusiasts. However, today’s automatic transmissions are first-rate, so there’s no performance or fuel economy benefit to be had with a manual. The paddle-shifters are smooth and fast, replicating the efficiency of a manual.
Powering the new M340i model is a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine developing 382 hp and 369 lb.-ft. of torque, mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.
The standard sport seats are spacious and comfortable. A leather-wrapped steering wheel is standard, and buyers can choose optional Vernasca leather as an option. The cabin is now even quieter than ever, thanks to additional sound-dampening materials and an acoustic windshield.
As you would expect, the 2019 BMW 3 Series comes with the latest technology features. One we particularly like is the new BMW Personal Assistant, which allows the driver to use voice commands to access vehicle information, get help with vehicle functions, change settings and more. All the driver needs to do is say “Hi BMW” to activate the voice function.
The Parking Assistance Package Plus can automatically park the car, and it will even drive itself out of parallel parking spots. The Back-Up Assistant can reverse out of tight spaces by remembering the last steering movements and reversing the same way.
Crash test results aren’t in as of this writing, however, we expect the 2019 3 Series to perform as well as the outgoing model. The 2018 3 Series received the highest rating of Good in all IIHS tests and was named a Top Safety Pick. The NHTSA gave the 2018 3 Series its top score of five stars in overall testing.
